Fall 2007 Update As always, we are keeping very busy and have just completed several great projects (we love those!). A few highlights include:
Using Open Directory, Desktop Management, Portable Home Directories, Netboot/NetInstall and other technologies, every 8th grade student at the school can now login anywhere on the network with their own wireless, roaming user account on their brand new MacBook! St. Isabella is the first K-8 school in the San Francisco Archdiocese to offer such a program to their student. Each laptop was carefully cloned so all machines are exactly the same: they are easier to maintain, helping the school reduce total cost of ownership for these machines. St. Isabella School in San Rafael is educating tomorrow's leaders, one student at a time.
The Follett Destiny Server had some hardware trouble with its power supply... This corrupted the Windows 2000, MSSQL Server and Tomcat installations. We recovered all data (bare metal) for the database from journals, reinstalled Destiny and MSSQL, then restored data with all records still intact, that took a while...
Push5 is an emergency alert system that, when combined with BOMAIC, lets members of small and large communities report emergencies and instantly communicate with one another via VoIP conference calls (thanks to Asterisk!). Users are notified via their cell phones, instant messengers and email, and can take preventive action to protect their community in case of safety issues. For a community like De Marillac Academy, this is an incredibly useful and efficient tool. De Marillac Academy is an educational family that provides an innovative, comprehensive and accessible Catholic education in the Vincentian and Lasallian traditions for children from underserved families in the Tenderloin and other at-risk communities in San Francisco. Of course, there is much more, but I guess it's not as interesting... |
