Fall 2008

Fall 2008 Update

As always, we are keeping very busy and have just completed several great projects. A few highlights include:

Installation of new Gigabit Managed Switches, Content-Layer Firewall at St. Isabella School

We recently installed brand new Gigabit managed switches at St. Isabella school to essentially double their internal network speed. Some of the network components were still using 10Mbps (the main hub!) so connectivity to the Internet and ISP was decreased dramatically. We also installed a content-layer firewall to take control of the network traffic back and limit what users could do onsite, it appears quite a few users were fans of P2P networks, and that limited outbound and inbound speeds to and from the Internet.

Coding and Development of new CMS, Online Application Portal at French-American Foundation for Medical Research and Education

We migrated the FFMRE's website to a new Content Management System to make it more attractive and interactive. The main project was to transition from a paper-based Scholarship Application system to an electronic portal. We wrote the online application form and management portal in PHP/MySQL. Now each online submission offers the ability to review the contents of the application before sending, anti-spam measures (captcha), automated email forwarding to the Director of the Program, and storage of all applications in MySQL with the ability to export records in Excel and more.

Coding of Online Applications in C#/ASP.NET/MSSQL/Javascript at Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart

We updated and rewrote various online applications (IIS, MSSQL, ASP.NET backend - C#/ASP/Javascript frontend) for the new year so information collected from the website can be used more efficiently. For instance, we rewrote the online school application form, webstore, calendar, online payment options and all the various reports that are automatically generated for each submission of these online applications. Currently, we are working on migration to a new payment gateway company and are writing code for the new APIs.

Installation of new Linux Server at De Marillac Academy

The main onsite Apache and Postfix Servers broke unexpectedly. Fortunately, we provide offsite mirrors of the services at our offices, so business could continue as usual. We provided hardware replacement in the form of a new quad-core Xeon 3.0GHz processor with ASUS motherboard, 3GB RAM and RAID1 160GB HD. Needless to say, the website and email services are back on (without missing a beat) and better than ever with these top of the line server hardware components. We also upgraded the OS from SuSE 9.3 to OpenSuse 11 (Linux) developed by Novell (my favorite Linux distribution).
